Dicolor COB LED Is Redefining High-Resolution AV Design
Dicolor’s latest COB (Chip-on-Board) LED developments are changing how high-resolution displays are specified, sized, and deployed across real-world AV environments.
Advances in pixel pitch are allowing more diodes to be placed within the same surface area. The result is higher resolution delivered in smaller physical formats. Where 4K LED once required large wall dimensions and viewing distances, COB technology now enables 4K and even 8K resolutions in screens as compact as 110 to 135 inches.
This shift is influencing how spaces are designed. LED displays are no longer treated as an add-on to a room. In some projects, walls are being specified around the screen itself, rather than screens being fitted into pre-defined architectural constraints.
Cost has also played a role in accelerating adoption. As COB technology matures and newer generations enter the market, pricing has continued to move downward. Displays that were previously limited to premium or specialised applications are now accessible within more modest project budgets, without compromising resolution or visual performance.
Power efficiency has become another key consideration. Improvements in diode selection and the integration of lower-consumption power supplies have reduced energy draw at both startup and typical operating levels. The outcome is comparable brightness with significantly lower power requirements, supporting more efficient long-term operation.
When it comes to emerging display technologies, COB currently presents a more stable and established path. While micro-LED continues to generate interest, the interview highlighted that COB offers a proven balance of energy efficiency, reliability, and image quality today. Flip-chip technology in particular has expanded the range of tailored solutions that can be delivered using COB architectures.
Together, these factors are reshaping how LED is specified. Higher resolution, smaller footprints, lower power consumption, and greater architectural flexibility are making COB LED a practical option across a broader range of AV applications.
