THE BRIEF

Located in the heart of Fitzroy, St. Kilda Park Primary School (SKiPPS) is a popular State Government School that caters to primary school-age children, and pride itself on providing a great foundation of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary for lifelong learning.

The pressure of implementing Remote Learning in the Education sector is increasing and has certainly been a hurdle for teachers this year, with student engagement being the number one issue during lockdown restrictions.

Pro AV Solutions were approached by SKiPPS to implement the SMART Learning Suite Online platform into their remote learning lessons for grade 5/6 students.
The solution not only had to ensure a pathway to success with remote learning technology, but also had to increase student engagement, and ensure ease-of-use and interactivity. Improved learning outcomes or expanding teacher digital pedagogical practices were also key to deliver a successful project.

THE SOLUTION

Based on the brief, Pro AV Solutions and SMART Technologies implemented the SLSO platform as a classroom solution that presents an opportunity to deepen engagement with students. SMART Learning Suite online allows educators to deliver interactive lessons, collaborative workspaces, game-based activities, and formative assessments, all while balancing individual classroom needs.

As this was a new initiative for the teachers in the team, and the school, and backing off a professional development session run by SMART and Pro AV Solutions, our education technology specialist had to coach a lead user who then filtered that down to the other members of the team. Throughout this, we worked directly with the team on the implementation of this first lesson to support them as they initiated this project and supported them remotely to address concerns, explore developments and assist them with their progress, as needed.

Using Google Hangouts in the classroom is a great way to connect and collaborate. It’s also a powerful tool for making connections, working collaboratively, and introducing the wider world to your students. Many educators have embraced Hangouts to enrich both their students’ learning experiences and their own professional development. Educators can connect students with their peers from around the country, or even from abroad if time zone differences permit.

Critical to the success of the new SLSO platform solution was that the school also took training seriously so that teachers were comfortable with their full functionality and how they could be leveraged for demonstrated improvement in learning outcomes.

The SLSO platform has not only allowed teachers to create an engaging environment but has also created a level of classroom interactivity that has created positive learning outcomes for students.
