Case Study – AHMS

University of Adelaide

THE BRIEF

The new Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building at the University of Adelaide transforms the way students learn and interact with adaptable learning and social environments.
This contemporary building promotes flexibility, interprofessional learning and collaboration across medicine, nursing, dentistry and health and medical sciences.

At any one time it will train 1600 medical, nursing and dental students, and house 400 researchers. Located in Adelaide City’s West-End, the new Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building is the largest capital works project in the University of Adelaide’s history at a total cost of $246 million dollars. Pro AV Solutions were commissioned to integrate cutting-edge technology across all 12 floors of the new building.

THE SOLUTION

Pro AV Solutions (SA) worked closely with Lend Lease, AECOM, the Medical Simulation Specialist B-Line and the University of Adelaide Project Team in an open and collaborative way to identify, design, deliver and address the Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building’s audio visual needs. This collaborative process allowed all stakeholders to openly communicate and refine the Audio Visual solutions to deliver what is arguably, one of the world’s best medical teaching facilities.

The Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building features state-of-the-art simulation suites and cutting-edge technology spread across 12 floors. Incorporating 3 Lecture Theatres, 24 Advanced Simulation Suites, 4 Floors of Laboratories, a Dental Hospital, Multiple Meeting/Study/Collaborative Spaces and Digital Signage, IPTV and Room Booking Systems across all floors.

Adelaide Health Simulation is home to the largest B-Line Medical SimCapture Enterprise Plus installation within Australasia.

Using their unique University of Adelaide student ID, learners can initiate learning and assessment activities using SimCapture’s LDAP integration across all 24 learning spaces. This is made possible by the custom install of tablets at the entry to each learning space. These features have revolutionized how assessment and learning are delivered.

Equal priority was given to both simulation and assessment activities in the design and implementation of the project. Educators have the freedom to set the Centre in ‘Simulation Mode’, ‘Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Mode’ or ‘Hospital Mode’, and ensures the technology is calibrated perfectly to the optimal learning environment required for each activity.

Across all 12-floors, the control solution that was determined as delivering the most flexible and reliable solution was AMX. From small meeting and collaborative spaces, to lecture theatres to the state-of-the-art medical teaching facility encompassing an entire floor of the building, the AMX control system is used to deliver smart and intuitive control.
